How to Travel Light in 2017
As 2016 comes to an end, I find myself standing in front of the closet of our Hilton Head beach rental facing the depressing task of packing for the trip home.
I dread seeing this family vacation come to an end. It’s been an especially fun week filled with bike rides in Sea Pines, long walks on the beach, and late nights playing Catan as my boys battle it out for “Master of the Game”– all the while showing dear old dad absolutely no mercy!
Reflecting on those fun memories, I notice that I’m repacking far too many clothes that I didn’t even touch during our stay.
Frustrating – especially considering that over the past few years I’ve attempted to drastically reduce the extra baggage in all areas of my life thanks to that midlife wake-up call that says:
“Life’s too short to waste a second carrying anything that doesn’t bring you joy.”
Hmmm. Must have let that revelation slip my mind. Funny how quickly old habits can push aside the best of intentions.
I begin to wonder what other old “friends” are slowly creeping back into my life and find myself inspired to reignite my passion to live free and let go of anything that might be weighing me down.
I think I just found my theme for 2017: The Year of Traveling Light.
Perfect timing since this year will be challenging in so many ways as we deal with changes with my husband’s job, my mother-in-law’s cancer diagnosis, and my oldest moving away to start a new chapter in his life.
If you’re like me and would like to let go of some extra baggage and travel a bit lighter in 2017, take these steps with me.
First, visualize the life you want to lead this year.
- Do you see yourself sitting at the dinner table enjoying delicious, healthy meals that you prepared yourself?
- Are you spending more time with your family and friends, fully present, with no cell phones allowed?
- Are you taking more walks in the park or curled up reading a good book?
Once you’ve become clear about who you want to be and how you want to live, then ask yourself:
“What’s stopping me from living that life today?”
Is it excuses, fear of failure, worry, overcommitment, or the unrealistic expectation that somehow we can have it all – like eating all the bread we want and still having the fit and healthy body we desire (I love you Oprah, but seriously girl!)?
What do you say we unpack anything that isn’t serving us and simply leave it behind?
I’m unpacking the worry of the unknown and the false idea that there’s no such thing as too much of a good thing (my waistline is telling me that ½ of an avocado rather than a whole might be a good plan for a few weeks!)
In their place I’m packing a new resolve to schedule more time with those that are the most important to me as well as a plan to experiment with new Primal recipes and add more superfoods into my diet.
Since I love inspiring others to get in the kitchen with me, stay tuned for some new recipes.
Good luck with the unpacking! To make the process a little bit more fun, let’s raise a smoothie glass and toast the beginning of a new year…..
Here’s to a Happy New Year and to traveling light in 2017!
